Waterless diffuser vs ultrasonic diffuser: what's the difference?

An ultrasonic diffuser mixes a few drops of oil into a tank of water and releases it as a visible mist. A waterless diffuser uses no water at all: it turns undiluted fragrance oil straight from a sealed bottle into a fine mist.

Both are electric and both scent a room, but they work differently and suit different homes. Here's a plain comparison, so you can decide which one fits how you live.

How an ultrasonic diffuser works

An ultrasonic diffuser has a water tank with a small plate at the bottom. You fill the tank with water, add a few drops of oil, and switch it on. The plate vibrates at a very high frequency and breaks the water and oil into a cool mist that rises out of the top.

  • Refilling: top up the water each time you use it, and add oil drops
  • The mist: you can see it, which some people like as a visual cue
  • Run time: limited by the tank size. Most switch off when the water runs out
  • Upkeep: the tank needs regular emptying and cleaning, following the maker's instructions

How a waterless diffuser works

A waterless diffuser takes a bottle of fragrance oil that connects directly to the unit. It breaks the oil into a very fine mist, usually so fine you can barely see it, and releases it into the room. There's no water to add and no heat involved.

  • Refilling: swap the bottle when it's empty. No measuring or mixing
  • The mist: fine and mostly invisible. You notice the scent, not a plume
  • Run time: set by the bottle size and your settings, often weeks or months
  • Upkeep: no tank to rinse. Wipe the outside and follow the care guide

Side by side

  • Water: ultrasonic needs it, waterless doesn't
  • Oil: ultrasonic uses drops diluted in water; waterless uses undiluted oil in a bottle made for the unit
  • Scent strength: because the oil isn't diluted, a waterless diffuser can scent a larger space
  • Control: both vary by model. Many waterless diffusers offer intensity settings and schedules

kirri's waterless diffusers

Every kirri electric diffuser is waterless. The oil bottle screws straight in and there's no water or heat.

  • Micro: our smallest diffuser, for bedrooms, studies and bathrooms. Takes Micro Oil (15ml)
  • Element: rechargeable, or run it plugged in. About 12 hours on low and 8 on high on battery. Takes Micro Oil (15ml), which typically lasts 1 to 3 months
  • Beacon: covers up to 300sqm. Takes Macro Oil (30ml), lasting 2 to 6 months, or Aura Oil (100ml), lasting 6 to 12 months
  • Pillar: floor-standing for larger rooms. Takes the same oils as the Beacon

On the Element, Beacon and Pillar, the kirri app sets the intensity: delicate, subtle, radiant or intense. We suggest starting on delicate and stepping up if you need to. You can also schedule run times, so the diffuser is on when you're home and off when you're not. Read more on the Beacon and Element pages.

Which one should you choose?

An ultrasonic diffuser suits you if you like to change oils often and enjoy seeing the mist, and you don't mind refilling the tank each session.

A waterless diffuser suits you if you want one scent running in the background for weeks with very little effort, or you need to fill a large or open-plan space. It's also the simpler option if you'd rather not deal with water near electronics on a timber sideboard.

Whichever you choose, only use the oil the maker recommends. Reed diffuser oil isn't suitable for either: we explain why in can you put reed diffuser oil in an electric diffuser. For a wider look at diffuser types, see what size diffuser do I need.

FAQ

Is a waterless diffuser the same as a nebulising diffuser?

The terms are often used for the same idea: a diffuser that uses undiluted oil and no water. Check how a specific model works before you buy.

Can I put water in a kirri diffuser?

No. The Micro, Element, Beacon and Pillar are waterless. Use only the kirri oil made for your model.

How long does a bottle last in a waterless diffuser?

It depends on the intensity and how many hours a day it runs. As a guide, the Beacon with a 100ml Aura Oil typically lasts 6 to 12 months.
