mushroom reef, at flinders on the mornington peninsula, is a marine sanctuary where the tide moves over dark, water-worn basalt instead of sand. that's the reference point here: stone shaped by years of tide, not size or spectacle, the kind you'd pick up and pocket without really deciding to. small enough to hold, weighted enough to matter.
