Reed diffuser vs candle: which is right for your home?

A reed diffuser gives a steady background scent around the clock for months, with no flame and no effort. A candle gives a stronger scent and warm light while it's burning, but only while you're there to watch it.

We make both, so this isn't a case of one winning. They do different jobs. Here's how they compare and where each one suits best.

How a reed diffuser works

Fragrance oil travels up porous reeds and evaporates from the tips. There's no power, no flame and nothing to switch on. Once it's set up, it scents the room day and night.

  • How long it lasts: a 200ml reed diffuser typically lasts 1 to 6 months, and a 100ml lasts 1 to 3 months
  • Effort: flip the reeds now and then to refresh the scent
  • Refillable: top up the bottle with a traditional refill instead of buying a new one

How a candle works

The heat of the flame melts the wax, and the fragrance in the warm wax is released into the room. The scent builds while the candle burns and fades a while after you blow it out.

  • Sizes: kirri 220g and 400g candles, in eight of our iconic scents
  • Scent strength: usually stronger than a reed diffuser while lit
  • The extra: soft light and a flicker that a diffuser can't give you

Side by side

  • Scent pattern: reed diffusers are steady all day; candles come and go with each burn
  • Supervision: a reed diffuser runs while you're out; a candle should never be left burning unattended
  • Best rooms: reed diffusers for bathrooms, hallways and entries; candles for living and dining areas when you're home
  • Feel: reed diffusers keep a room smelling the same every time you walk in; candles mark an occasion, like dinner or a quiet night in

Candle care and safety

Never leave a candle burning unattended, and blow it out before you leave the room or go to bed.

  • Placement: on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from curtains, draughts and anything that can catch
  • Kids and pets: keep candles well out of reach
  • The wick: trim it before each burn and follow the directions on the label

Reed diffusers have their own simple rules: keep them out of reach of children and pets, out of direct sun and on a tray to protect the surface. See where to put a reed diffuser.

Which should you choose?

Choose a reed diffuser if you want the house to smell good when you walk in the door, without thinking about it. It's the better pick for a bathroom, a rental with a busy household, or a room you don't spend long in.

Choose a candle for the moments you're home and want to set the scene. A 400g candle on the dining table for a long lunch is a different experience to a diffuser on the hall table, and that's the point.

Using both in the same home

Plenty of our customers do both. The easiest way is to keep the scents in the same family, so the house feels consistent.

  • Same scent: a santal woods reed diffuser in the hallway and a santal woods candle in the living room
  • Shared notes: botanical gardens and country linen both have rose and jasmine, so they sit well together

FAQ

Which smells stronger, a candle or a reed diffuser?

While it's lit, a candle usually has a stronger scent. A reed diffuser is softer but constant, so over a whole day it's often the one you notice more.

Which lasts longer?

A 200ml reed diffuser typically lasts 1 to 6 months of continuous scent. A candle lasts a set number of burns, which depends on its size and how long you burn it each time.

Can I use a candle and a reed diffuser in the same room?

Yes. Keep the candle away from the reeds and the oil bottle, and choose scents that suit each other.
