great rooms work on more than sight.
scent is the layer most homes skip.
the story behind it
santal woods started in the australian bush, among old trees a long way from town.
the ground is dry and the bark has been baking all afternoon.
somewhere off in the distance, someone has lit a fire.
it smells of earth, a little smoke and warm timber.
what a building can teach a fragrance
on sydney harbour, one of our favourite buildings wraps the water in curved glass.
it catches the light off the harbour all day.
behind the glass sit warm timber and open space.
the idea we borrowed
- warm against cool: sandalwood and cedar play the timber; violet and iris play the glass
- never heavy: papyrus keeps it dry, so it doesn't sit thick in the air
- it stays after you leave: amber in the base lingers in the room
- strength: 3 out of 5, easy to live with every day
why australian sandalwood
- where it's from: a regulated harvest in western australia
- why it costs more: we chose it over over-harvested, old-growth indian sandalwood
- who made it: composed by our master perfumers. meet the perfumers
- made in australia: with oils from french perfumery
where it works best
- entry: a 200ml reed diffuser, the first thing guests notice
- open-plan living: the beacon with a 100ml aura oil
- bedroom: a few sprays of the 50ml room spray in the evening
- study: a 15ml micro oil in the element, on delicate
