every scent starts somewhere.
bondi started on a swiss glacier.
a hike with a friend
rené morgenthaler, our master perfumer, was born in geneva.
he was hiking a large swiss mountain with a close friend.
that friend is a fragrance materials specialist, a real authority in the field.
a smell neither could name
at the top of the glacier, they caught an incredibly fresh note in the air.
two experts, and neither could work out what it was.
then it clicked. it was coming from the ice beneath their feet.
racing the thaw
out came the ice pick. they hacked out a giant chunk of ice.
then they got down the mountain as fast as they could, before it melted.
back in the lab, the ice went straight under the microscope.
the answer in the ice
growing inside it was a green algae. that was the fresh smell.
they rebuilt the note as a fragrance material.
then they kept working on it until it was ready for perfume.
that material became the key ingredient in bondi.
