How to care for your reed diffuser: the complete kirri guide

A reed diffuser is about as simple as home fragrance gets. The reeds are porous, so they draw the fragrance oil up from the bottle and release it into the room, with no flame and no power. A little care makes a big difference to how strong it smells and how long it lasts, so here is everything we get asked about in one place.

How long does a reed diffuser last?

A 100ml kirri reed diffuser typically lasts about 1 to 3 months, and a 200ml about 1 to 6 months. Where it sits in that range depends on how many reeds you use, how often you flip them, and how warm and airy the room is. Hot summer days and a spot near a fan will use oil faster. A 500ml reed refill tops up your bottle when it runs low.

Setting it up

  • Find a flat, stable spot first: it's easier to place the bottle before the reeds go in.
  • Open the bottle carefully: remove the stopper over a sink or a tea towel in case of drips.
  • Add the reeds: place them in the bottle and let them soak up the oil. Give them a few hours before you judge the scent.
  • Flip once to start: after the first hour or so, turn the reeds over so the soaked ends are in the air. This gets the scent going faster.

How many reeds should you use?

More reeds means a stronger scent, and fewer means a softer one. As a guide, start with 4 to 6 reeds in a 200ml diffuser and adjust from there.

  • Small room or bedroom: stay at the lower end, or take a couple out if it feels too strong near the bed.
  • Large room or busy hallway: add a few more so the scent reaches the whole space.
  • Sensitive to scent? Start with fewer reeds and add one at a time.

Keep in mind that more reeds also use the oil up faster.

When to flip your reeds

Flip the reeds about once a week. Over time the tips in the air dry out and the scent softens, and turning them over puts the freshly soaked ends to work. If you want a stronger burst before guests arrive, a flip is the quickest fix.

Flip over a sink or a paper towel, as the wet ends can drip and oil can mark timber, stone and painted surfaces.

When to replace your reeds

  • When they stop working: if a flip no longer lifts the scent, the reeds are likely clogged with dust and oil.
  • When you refill: fresh reeds with fresh oil give the best result.
  • When you change scent: reeds hold on to the old fragrance and can't be washed out, so always start a new scent with new reeds.

Spare reeds are available in a reeds pack.

Where to put your reed diffuser

  • Away from direct sun and heat: sunlight and heaters make the oil evaporate faster and can change the scent.
  • Away from strong draughts: windows, fans and air-conditioning vents carry the scent away before you notice it.
  • Somewhere you pass often: an entry table, bathroom vanity, kitchen bench or bedside table. Moving air from people walking past helps spread the scent.
  • On a coaster or mat: this protects timber, stone and painted surfaces from drips.
  • Out of reach of children and pets: keep it somewhere it can't be knocked over, and check the label for safety directions.

Moving it to another room? Take the reeds out and put the stopper back in first, and keep the bottle upright so nothing spills.

How to refill your reed diffuser

  • Use it up or tip it out: wait until the bottle is nearly empty, or pour any leftover oil out if you're changing scent. Mixing two scents in one bottle rarely smells the way you'd hope.
  • Clean the bottle: wash it in hot water with a little dishwashing liquid, rinse well and let it dry completely before refilling.
  • Pour in the refill: use a small funnel to avoid spills, and don't fill it to the brim. Browse traditional refills.
  • Add fresh reeds: and give them a flip after the first hour.

How to make your reed diffuser smell stronger

  • Flip the reeds: the simplest fix, and usually all it needs.
  • Add a few reeds: more surface area means more scent in the room.
  • Move it: a spot in the middle of the room, away from vents and open windows, spreads scent more evenly.
  • Replace tired reeds: old reeds clog and stop drawing oil up properly.

For a large or open-plan space, a reed diffuser may simply be too small for the job. An Element, Beacon or Pillar diffuser lets you set the strength in the kirri app, from delicate to intense. Browse smart diffusers, or check what size diffuser you need for the room. If the scent itself feels too soft or too strong, our scent strength guide rates every iconic scent from 1/5 to 5/5.

Troubleshooting

  • I can't smell it anymore: you may have got used to it. Step outside for a few minutes and come back, or ask a visitor. Then try a flip.
  • The scent faded after a few weeks: check the oil level and the reeds. Dry, dusty reeds are the usual cause.
  • The oil is going too fast: take out a few reeds and move the bottle out of the sun and away from fans.
  • It's too strong: remove a couple of reeds, or move it to a bigger or busier room.
